Egypt begins installing tunnel detection equipment

CAIRO: An Egyptian security official at the Egypt-Gaza border says U.S. Army engineers have arrived at the frontier to set up ground-penetrating radar to detect smuggling tunnels.

The officials say the new equipment would help stop the smuggling in the area, which has been the main entrance for weapons and explosives used by the Palestinian militant group Hamas against Israel.

Inside the Rafah terminal on Sunday, four army trucks loaded with wooden crates and drills could be seen accompanied by four U.S. Army engineers.

The Egyptian officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity the subject.

Israel has repeatedly called on Egypt to do more to end the smuggling.
